A chandelier is a beautiful, elegant addition to any room.  This is particularly true in the dining room where a chandelier can be used as focal point.  However, chandeliers that are too large or too small for the space where they are used will make them seem disproportionate with the room.  To prevent this, you need to understand how to size your chandelier to fit the room.  These guidelines for various spaces will help you in your selection process.

Knowing How to Size Your Chandelier in the Dining Room

One of the first tips to selecting an appropriate chandelier size is to measure the width of the table that it will be hanging over.  A chandelier with a diameter that is one-half to two-thirds of that width will be an appropriate size.  Another way to know how to size your chandelier is to select one that has a diameter that is one foot less that the table’s width.  This proportion will allow guests to avoid bumping their heads against the fixture.  From a design standpoint, if this proportion is not achievable, it’s better to go with a larger fixture.  It will simply need to be hung higher so that it doesn’t affect guests.  Also, keep in mind that the edge of the fixture should be less than 48 inches from the wall.  These tips will keep the chandelier proportional with the entire room.

Using Chandeliers in Other Spaces

Chandeliers can add extra sparkle and character in other spaces of the home such as the foyer, great room and even the kitchen.  When selecting a chandelier for these spaces, it’s important to not only consider the size of the fixture but also its visual weight.  For instance, if you are using a heavy, elaborately styled chandelier, you can choose one that is on the smaller side because visually, it will still make an impact.  More delicate fixtures can be larger than suggested because they visually seem lighter.

Determining How to Size Your Chandelier

Interior designers have several tips to selecting a chandelier’s size for a room.  The first rule of thumb is to measure the width and length of the space in feet and add them together.  Using that number in inches will give you the best size for a chandelier in that space.  For instance, for a 12 ft x 12 ft, space, a chandelier with a 24 in diameter is a good size.

Other rules of thumb include selecting a chandelier that is 17-20 in for spaces that are 10 ft x 10 ft.  Rooms that are 12 ft x 12 ft can use a fixture that is 22-27 in. wide.  At 14 ft x 14 ft, a 24-32 in fixture is appropriate.  Larger spaces can use chandeliers that are 32 in wide or larger.
